Watch Home Plate Umpire Derryl Cousins Trip Over Carlos Santana (Video)
Being a Major League umpire has got to be a hard job. Not only do you have to wear a ton of equipment out there under the hot sun in the middle of the summer, but pretty much everyone is just waiting to go off on you if you even come close to blowing a call.
Called third strike? Brett Lawrie is going to throw his helmet at you. Eject someone a little prematurely? Broadcaster Hawk Harrelson is going to rip you a new one. Get a little too creative with your punchout move? TotalProSports is going to mock you.
So umpires really do have it rough. And when the man in black behind the plate trips over the catcher and does a face plant into the dirt the way Derryl Cousins did last night? Well, that’s just adding insult to injury.
In the 6th inning of the Reds-Indians game last night in Cleveland, Cincinnati shortstop Zack Cozart sent a dribbler bouncing up the third base line. Home plate umpire Derryl Cousins had to hop out from behind the plate to see whether the ball would stay fair or go foul, but he tripped over Indians catcher Carlos Santana and fell face first.
At least Santana was nice enough to help the guy up and dust him off. Also, it should be noted that, even while lying face-down in the dirt, Cousins had the presence of mind to look up and catch the play.
That’s a real pro.
