It was on this day in 1992 that Denmark won the UEFA European Football Championships.  They would beat Germany in the finals by a score of 2-0, en route to the country’s first victory at a major tournament (World Cup or UEFA Euro Cup).

Germany entered the tournament as favorites, as they were only two years removed from winning the 1990 World Cup in Italy.  The Germans struggled through the Group Stage, as they tied the Commonwealth of Independent States (consisting of 11 countries that were former republics of the Soviet Union), beat Scotland, and lost to Holland.  Their 1-1-1 record was enough to secure second-place in Group B, setting up a semi-final match against the host country, Sweden.

As for Denmark, they entered the tournament as replacements for Yugoslavia, and they experienced a very similar run through the Group Stage, as they tied England in their opener, before losing to Sweden and defeating France.  They would take on Holland in the semi-finals, and they shocked many by earning the victory in penalty kicks.  They would then face Germany in the finals after the Germans defeated Sweden 3-2 in their semi-final match, and it was another shocking result for the Danes, as goals in the 18th and 78th minutes from John Jensen and Kim Vilfort, respectively, would help them earn the 2-0 victory, and their first ever UEFA European Championship title.
