Stat Line Of The Night — 7/8/12 — Roger Federer
Stat Line Of The Night — 7/9/12 — Prince Fielder
Three years ago, Price Fielder won the 2009 MLB State Farm Home Run Derby as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, when he hit a total of 26 dingers over the outfield wall at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. After an unsuccessful return to the competition in 2011, he was looking to reclaim his title during his appearance in last night’s competition, and he would do just that.
The Detroit Tigers’ first baseman was unimpressive during the first round, hitting only five homers and barely squeaking into Round 2 of the competition. He would eventually find his groove, hitting 11 home runs in the second round, and securing a spot in the finals where he would take on the MLB’s current home run leader, Jose Bautista.
Fielder’s 12 home runs in the finals were simply too much for Bautista to match, giving Prince his second career Home Run Derby title. With the victory, Fielder became just the second player to win the Derby twice (Ken Griffey Jr. is the other) and the first to win it as a member of the American League and National League. And his 28 total home runs during the competition also earn him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, July 9, 2012.
