Darren Mattocks’ Goal Is The Soccer Equivalent Of The Basketball Facial (Video)
In basketball, a facial is when somebody dunks the ball right in a defender’s face. This, of course, is not to be confused with the kind of exfoliating facial you get at the spa or, um, the kind you get, you know, elsewhere.
Of course, getting a basketball facial is also closely related to getting posterized, which is when someone jumps over and/or past you to make an epic dunk worthy of a poster kids would tape up on their bedroom walls.
So what is the soccer equivalent of these basketball plays? It’s this:
That is the Vancouver Whitecaps’ Darren Mattocks scoring a beautiful header against Toronto FC last night at BMO field in Toronto. And as you can see, he pulls off the rare facial-posterization combo by leaping up and over goalie Milos Kocic and right into the face of the Toronto defender, Logan Emory, getting to the ball first and putting in into the back of the net.
The guy has one hell of a vertical, doesn’t he?
Anyway, this stellar goal – Mattocks’s second of the night – tied the game 2-2 at the 90 minute mark. So it earned the Whitecaps a point in the standings, right? Wrong. This was just the beginning of a wild ending, as Toronto ended up scoring 5 minutes into extra time, on the last play of the game, to earn a 3-2 victory.
