UFC Champ Georges St-Pierre Kicks Ninja Butt In New Google “Unboxing” Commercial (Video)
If you’re not familiar with the popular genre of geek porn known as “unboxing,” it’s basically just videos of tech bloggers taking new gadgets out of the boxes and playing with them.
Really. That’s it. But they’ve become a big deal in the tech world, so people have tried to up the ante and create funny or otherwise memorable unboxing videos. And that includes the companies that make the gadgets themselves. Google, for example, has a whole series of unboxing videos for their products featuring a team of stop-motion animation ninjas. So in case you were wondering, yes, the consumer-driven “unboxing” trend has been re-appropriated by corporations and turned into extra long YouTube commercials.
Here is Google’s ninja unboxing video for their Nexus One phone, so you can see what I’m talking about:
Anyway, for their latest unboxing video, Google decided to enlist the help of someone who could defeat these pesky ninjas. So obviously, they turned to UFC Welterweight Champion and the #2-ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Georges St-Pierre.
In the video, St-Pierre plays an internet tech expert named Dr. Paul. When Dr. Paul starts unboxing his new Nexus 7 Android tablet, he suddenly finds himself under attack from the unboxing ninjas and has to fight them off one by one. Then Dr. Paul makes the injured ninjas some tea and they all play with the Nexus 7.
Of course, I’m sure none of that made any sense to you. So just watch the commercial—opps, I mean the “unboxing.”
