This Day In Sports History (July 17th) — Tiger Woods
It was on this day in 1970 that Willie Mays recorded the 3000th hit of his career. He became just the tenth member to join the 3000 hit club.
While playing with the San Francisco Giants, Mays reached the 3000 hit mark with a single against Montreal Expos pitcher Mike Wegener. Mays would go 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, adding one run and one RBI during the Giants’ 10-1 victory. Mays’ 3000th hit came just two months after Hank Aaron reached the 3000 hit club. He would end his career with a total of 3283 hits, good enough for 11th all-time.
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter recently became the 28th player in Major League History to record 3000 hits. He reached the mark with a home run off David Price of the Tamp Bay Rays on July 9th, 2011.
