Stat Line Of The Night — 7/18/12 — Cody Ross
Stat Line Of The Night — 7/19/12 — Edinson Volquez
With an MLB-low 337 runs scored on the season, the San Diego Padres’ pitching staff knows that every game they go into, they aren’t likely to get a whole lot of run support. That was certainly the case for Padres starter Edinson Volquez last night, as his team could only manage four hits and one run against the Houston Astros (who aren’t much better offensively, with only 357 runs of their own on the season). However, that one run was all Volquez would need on this night.
The former Cincinnati Red was nearly unhittable, as he allowed just one hit (an infield single in the fourth) and three walks while striking out five during his complete-game shutout performance. It was just the type of outing the Padres needed, as it allowed them to escape with the 1-0 victory.
With the victory, the Padres complete their four-game set with the Astros by taking the final three contests. As for Volquez, he improves to 6-7 on the year with a 3.34 ERA, and he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, July 19, 2012.
