Stat Line Of The Night — 7/25/12 — Stephen Strasburg
Throughout the entire season, Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson has sworn to shut down pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg once he reaches his 160-inning limit. But with the Nats sitting atop the NL East and looking primed for a playoff birth, shutting Strasburg down won’t be an easy move to go through with, especially when the 24-year-old righty is coming up with performances like yesterday’s against the Mets.
Strasburg has not pitched more than seven innings on any occasion this season, but he could have easily went longer on Wednesday, as he allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters (with a pitch count of 94) during the Nationals’ 5-2 victory over the Mets.
With the win, Strasburg moved to 11-4 on the season with a 2.76 ERA — numbers that will only make Davey Johnson’s decision that much more difficult. With a total of 117.1 innings pitched on the season, he only has 42.9 left, but he still looks fresh as he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, July 25, 2012.
