Stat Line Of The Night — 8/1/12 — Matt Holliday
Stat Line Of The Night — 8/2/12 — Team USA Basketball
I was going to award the “Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, August 2, 2012 to Carmelo Anthony after his 37 points and 10 three-pointers helped him break the Team USA single-game scoring and three-point records in under 15 minutes of action, but it was almost impossible to overlook the incredible statistical performance put up by the team as a whole.
For starters, they led by 26 after the first quarter, and scored an Olympic record 78 points in the first half. They set US records for three-pointers (26), field goals (59) and field-goal percentage (71) in a single game. And they would pass the Olympic record for most points in a single game with 4:37 remaining on the clock, as they cruised to the 156-73 victory over their inferior opponents from Nigeria.
In addition to all of those records, Team USA also set a USA men’s basketball record for largest margin of victory, as their 83-point win over Nigeria surpassed their 72-point win over Thailand in 1956. After being criticized for their slow starts and questionable shooting at times, this victory should silence the critics, and it earns Team USA the “Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, August 2, 2012.
