Stat Line Of The Night — 9/9/12 — B.J. Upton
On most occasions, Jake Shields’ complete-game, two-hit shutout performance would easily be enough to earn him “Stat Line of the Night” honors, but on Sunday, it wasn’t even the most impressive performance from his own team, thanks to B.J. Upton’s terrific outing at the plate.
Upton was a force to be reckoned with, as he belted solo home runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. It was the first three-home-run game in Upton’s career, and the third in Tampa Bay Rays’ history, as it helped them earn the 6-0 victory over the American League-leading Texas Rangers.
With just 18 home runs and a .252 batting average heading into yesterday’s game, Upton hadn’t exactly been striking fear into the eyes of opposing pitchers. But he was a nightmare to deal with for the Rangers on this occasion, as he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Sunday, September 9, 2012.
