This Day In Sports History (September 17th) – 1988 Summer Olympics
Another chapter was added to one of rugby’s most storied rivalries, as the New Zealand All Blacks faced off against the South Africa Springboks during Round 4 of the 2012 Four Nations Rugby Championship on Saturday. And it was a rather brutal chapter, to say the least, as the match was marred by a vicious elbow to the head of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw, courtesy of the Springboks’ Dean Greyling.
It took place during the 64th minute of the All-Blacks’ 21-11 victory, as Greyling leaped over a ruck and clocked McCaw in the jaw. That reckless act earned the Boks’ prop ten minute in the sinbin, as he has since been suspended for South Africa’s upcoming Round 5 match-up against Australia.
You can watch it all unfold in the video blow:
Needless to say, that elbow could have (and probably should have) earned Greyling more than just a one-game break.
