This Day In Sports History (October 10th) — Lawrence Taylor
It was on this day in 1994 that the New York Giants retired Lawrence Taylor’s No. 56 jersey.
Taylor player his entire 13-year career with the Giants, which spanned from 1981-1993. Despite plenty of off-field issues, the Giants’ linebacker was still a 10-time All-Pro, 10-time Pro Bowler, three-time Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Super Bowl champion, and he was also named the AP NFL MVP in 1986. It was only the second time in NFL history that a defensive player has earned MVP honors, and Taylor was well deserving of it, as he recorded a career-high 20.5 sacks in 16 games.
Taylor would retire following the 1993 season with a career total of 1,088 tackles, 142 sacks and nine interceptions.
