Soccer referees are frequently the targets of nasty invectives and violent outbursts, both from players and fans. I mean, how many times have we seen a soccer official get run off the pitch by players, or suddenly attacked by a deranged fan…or angrily headbutted by a player?

Answer: way too many times.

Well, back in August, one soccer official decided enough was enough. During a low-league soccer match in Turkey between Altinorduspor (red) and Pazarspor (blue), a Pazarspor player was preparing to take a free kick when one of the linesman suddenly ran out onto the field and coldcocked an Altinorduspor player right in the face.

Why? We have no idea, but I’m betting the guy who got punched said something nasty to the official.

In any case, the really surprising thing is that, in the immediate aftermath of the referee’s attack, things stayed relatively calm. Some people came from the sidelines right away to escort the official off the field, and a number of people jumped in to keep would-be combatants away from each other. However, eventually the player who got punched insisted on having words with his attacker, and, yeah, that’s when things got a little out of hand.

I bet you’ve never seen anything like that before, have you?
