After watching his team squander a 2-0 series lead, Justin Verlander was called upon to save the Tigers’ season on Thursday night, as they faced a do-or-die situation in Game 5 of the ALDS.  And, as usual, their ace did not disappoint, as Verlander pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out 11 during Detroit’s 6-0 series-clinching victory over the Oakland A’s.

One year after earning AL MVP and Cy Young honors, Verlander had himself another solid season on the mound, as he finished with a 17-8 record, a 2.64 ERA, and a league-leading 239 strikeouts.  And he has carried that success over to the post-season, where he is now 2-0 with 22 strikeouts and a 0.56 ERA after last night’s performance, which also earned him “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, October 11, 2012.
