Seitaridis’ Embarrassing Own Goal Results In Panathinaikos UCL Loss (Video)
All Greek soccer clubs have been hit pretty hard by the economic crisis in that country, but perhaps none have been as challenged as Panathinaikos FC. Because you see, Panathinaikos is supporter owned, which means they don’t have the personal fortune of some billionaire to fall back on.
So this is a team that really could use a strong showing in the UEFA Europa League. And a win over Italian club Lazio yesterday at home in Athens would have tied Panathinaikos for the Group J lead.
Unfortunately, they did not beat Lazio. Oh, sure, they could have. The game was there for the taking. But defender Giourkas Seitaridis scored an absolutely brutal own-goal to hand Lazio a 1-0 lead just 25 minutes into the game.
Check it out:
Yeah, that’s a bummer. Seitaridis probably wanted to just run off the field and bury his head in the sand after that one. However, his teammates redeemed him later on. Panathinaikos scored an equalizer in the 90th minute to avoid taking the loss. Of course, scoring that equalizer also made the whole team realize that they could have won that game. So I guess it was a bit of a double-edged sword.
