It was on this day in 1908 that the closing ceremonies for the Summer Olympic Games in London, England were held. The 1908 Olympic Games began on April 27, with 110 events taking place in 22 different sports. These games marked the beginning of the Fourth Olympiad.
The 1908 Olympic Games were officially opened by King Edward VII at White City Stadium. It was originally supposed to take place in Rome, but the eruption of Mount Vesuvius caused Italian authorities and the IOC to seek a change in location. As the new host location, Great Britain would go on to dominate the medal count, winning 56 golds and 146 total medals. Their next closest competitor was the United States, who captured 23 golds and 47 total medals.
