It was on this day in 1995 that Dan Marino passed for his 47,004th career passing yard.  This surpassed the mark which was previously held by Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton.

At the time of his retirement, Dan Marino held most of the significant passing records in the NFL, including most career attempts, most career completions, most career passing yards and most career touchdown passes.  All four of those records have since been surpassed by Brett Favre.  As for his record 48 touchdowns in a single season, that was beaten by Peyton Manning in 2004 with 49, and again by current holder Tom Brady in 2007 with 50.  And just last year, Marino’s record of 5,084 passing yards in a single season set in 1984 was passed by Drew Brees (5,476).

Unfortunately for Marino, he was never able to win a Super Bowl, but his impressive numbers and numerous records will forever place him among the league’s top quarterback of all-time.
