It was on this day in 1964 that Gordie Howe set the record for most career NHL goals, with his 627th.

The 1964-65 season was Howe's 19th in the league, and while it certainly wasn't his best, it was still pretty impressive, as the 36-year-old (at the time) recorded 29 goals, 47 assists and 104 penalty minutes in 70 games.  He would go on to play 13 more seasons in the NHL and WHL before calling it quits, only to suit up for the IHL's Detroit Vipers in 1997, becoming the only player in hockey history to compete in six different decades at the professional le

vel.

Howe set plenty of records during what would turn out to be a long, decorated career for the Hall of Fame forward.  In addition to earning the NHL record for most goals in a career (801), he would also set records for most assists (1049) and most points (1850).  However, all three of those records would be broken by none other than “The Great One,” Wayne Gretzky.
