Johnny Manziel Attempted and Missed an Extra Point on Saturday (Video)
Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel entered the weekend as the second-largest favorite to win the 2012 Heisman Trophy, behind Kansas State quarterback Colin Klein. And his chances of taking home the award got a heck of a lot better following the No.1 ranked Wildcats’ unexpected loss to Baylor on Saturday.
While Klein was busy throwing three interceptions during his team’s 52-24 loss, Manziel was having his way with Sam Houston State, throwing for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and adding another 100 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. That gives the freshman quarterback an impressive 3,047 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions through the air, while rushing for another 1,114 yards and 17 touchdowns this season. Statistics like that, along with a 9-2 record, should earn Manziel his fair share of Heisman votes, but it wasn’t all pretty for the Aggies quarterback’s stat line on Saturday.
If there was one glaring deficiency in Manziel’s game during his dominating effort against Sam Houston State, it was his 0% conversion rate on extra point attempts, as he missed this one with his team up 40-0.
Sure, sending his star quarterback out there to kick an extra point during a blowout victory may seem like quite the classless act from Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin, but according to one YouTube commenter, there was actually a very good reason behind his decision:
“The coach made him do it so our fans would get off our kickers ass. Basically showing that its not easy to be a good kicker. It wasn’t Johnny’s idea.”
Good point. If a dude with the nickname “Johnny Football” can’t even hit an extra point, I guess kicking isn’t so easy after all.
