This Day In Sports History (January 11th) – AFC & NFC Championship Games
It was on this day in 1998 that both the NFC and AFC Championship Games took place. The Pittsburgh Steelers hosted the Denver Broncos in the AFC while the Green Bay Packers traveled to San Francisco to take on the 49ers in the NFC.
The Denver Broncos were led by their defense and running back Terrell Davis, as they beat the Steelers 24-21. Denver’s defense forced Pittsburgh quarterback Kordell Stewart to commit four turnovers (3 interceptions, 1 fumble), and Davis ran the ball well against a tough Steelers defense, finishing the game with 139 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The Green Bay Packers were also led by their defense, as well as regular season co- MVP Brett Favre. The 49ers only managed three points on offense, with their lone touchdown of the game coming in the final minutes on a kick-off return during the 23-10 loss. Favre completed 16 of his 27 pass attempts for 222 yards. which included a 29-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Freeman.
Here is a tribute to the 1997-98 Denver Broncos.
