This Day In Sports History (January 22nd) — Super Bowl XXIII
It was on this day in 1989 that Super Bowl XXIII took place at Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami, Florida. The game was played between the San Francisco 49ers, who were representing the NFC, and the Cincinnati Bengals, who were representing the AFC.
The Bengals finished the season with an impressive 12-4 record, and their quarterback, Boomer Esiason, earned NFL MVP honors that season, but they still entered Super Bowl XXIII as big underdogs against Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers, who finished the season with a 10-6 record.
The game turned out to be a rather uneventful one throughout the opening 30 minutes, as the teams exchanged first-half field-goals. And they would also exchange field goals in the third quarter, until the Bengals' Stanford Jennings finally provided the game with its first touchdown by returning a kickoff 93-yards to the house with less than a minute left in the quarter. The 49ers responded w
ith a Jerry Rice 14-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 13-13, but the Bengals would follow that up by kicking a field-goal to take a 16-13 lead. That set the stage for another one of Joe Montana's historic game-winning drives, as he took his team on an 11-play, 92-yard drive that was capped off with a 10-yard game-winning touchdown pass to John Taylor with only 39 seconds remaining.
That 20-16 victory gave the 49ers their third Super Bowl title in franchise history (they have won two more since). And while Joe Montana did throw for an impressive 357 yards and two touchdowns, it was his teammate, Jerry Rice, who earned MVP honors with his 11 receptions for a Super Bowl record 215 yards and one touchdown.
Here is a look at the 49ers' game-winning drive from Super Bowl XXIII.
