It was on this day in 1989 that Kareem Abdul-Jabar scored the 38,000th point of his NBA career.  With it, he became the first player in league history to reach that mark.

Kareem reached the 38,000-point mark in the final year of his career, as he retired at the conclusion of the 1988-89 NBA season.  The 7'2″ center spent his first six NBA seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, before being sent to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the final 14 seasons of his career.  During his 20 years in the league, Kareer Abdul-Jabbar accumulated six NBA titles, two Finals MVP awards, six NBA MVP awards, 19 All-Star appearances, two s

coring titles, and a record 38,387 career points, which still stands to this day.

Kareem currently sits 1,459 points ahead of Karl Malone, who is second on the NBA's career scoring list.  As for the closest active player to Kareem's record, that would be Kobe Bryant, who currently sits at 30,813 career points.
