In case you hadn’t noticed, the 2013 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue hit newsstands this week. And the big news is that, for the second year in a row, the cover girl is none other than the ridiculously gorgeous Kate Upton. Now, I don’t know about you, but when I found out Kate Upton had made the cover again, I wondered how many models had made the cover more than once, let alone two years in a row. So I looked it up and found that Kate is the 13th two-time SI Swimsuit cover girl.

Who are the others? Well, wouldn’t you know it, that’s the subject of today’s list! Funny how that works.

Anyway, take a look. You won’t regret it.

The legendary Cheryl Tiegs first appeared on the cover of the SI Swimsuit Issue in 1970, and in 1975, for the 12th ever issue, she became the first woman to appear on the cover for a second time. Then she became the first person to appear on the cover for a third time in 1983. At the time 3 covers was a record, of course, but now she’s in a four-way tie for second.

Christie Brinkley is one of the women tied with Cheryl Tiegs for second-most SI Swimsuit Issue covers. The main difference between them, though, is that Christie made the cover three years in a row: 1979, 1980, and 1981. And so she made history by being the first model to make the SI cover back-to-back, then made history again by becoming the first to made the cover back-to-back-to-back.

I don’t know about you, but I think Christie Brinkley was definitely worthy of this distinction.

Just a couple of years after Christie Brinkley’s three-peat, Paulina Porzikova made the cover in back-to-back years: 1984 and 1985. She didn’t get to do a three-peat of her own, however, because another model soon stole the limelight and pulled a three-peat of her own…

That model was Elle Macpherson. The Australian beauty was the third woman to make two straight covers and the second (and last) to make three straight. The years: 1986, 1987, and 1988. Of course, Elle wasn’t finished in ’88. She appeared on the cover again in 1994 and 2006—though each time with other women—bringing her grand total up to five. And yes, that is the record. In fact, nobody else even has four.

Kathy Ireland never made two covers in a row, but she is one of the four women to make three. Her years were 1989, 1992, and 1994. On that 1994 SI Swimsuit Cover she appeared with Elle Macpherson and Rachel Hunter. It was Elle’s fourth cover and the first of Rachel’s two. They billed it that cover as being a kind of SI Swimsuit Dream Team.

Strangely enough, SI didn’t put a black woman on the cover of their Swimsuit Issue until 1996, and even then she was paired with a white chick. However, that woman was Tyra Banks, and she made the cover again in 1997 all by herself. (In case you were wondering, the second black woman on the cover of the SI Swimsuit Issue was Beyoncé in 2007.)

Rebecca Romijn is our second model in a row who didn’t appear on two covers all by herself. Sure, her first appearance was solo. That was in 1999. But her second appearance in 2006 was with a whopping eight other women. But hey, the cover is the cover.

Daniela is the fifth and (so far) final woman in the “three covers club”: Tiegs, Brinkley, Ireland, Macpherson (who has five), and Pestova. That’s some pretty elite company, and I must admit she was always my personal favorite. She made it for the first time in 1995, for the second time in 2000, and for the third time in 2006.

Elsa Benitez became the first Mexican (though only the third Latina) to make the cover of the SI Swimsuit Issue back in 2001. Then she graced the cover again in 2006, appearing on the megacover with seven other models. In 2009 she became the host of Mexico’s Next Top Model. I guess she figured, hey, if Heidi Klum can do it, so can I.

And speaking of Heidi Klum, no, she is not on the list. Somehow Heidi only managed to make the cover one time in 1998.

Yamila Diaz made the cover all by herself in 2002 and then—yep, you guessed it—made her second appearance on the megacover in 2006. The exotic looking Argentine beauty has also grace the covers of GQ, Glamour, Maxim, Elle, and Shape, and has been featured in the pages of the Victoria’s Secret catalogue…just to name a few.

Feel like you’ve seen Veronica Varekova somewhere recently? Well maybe it was here at TotalProSports. Just a few weeks ago she was featured in our list of the hottest NHL celebrity WAGs of all-time. In any case, Veronica made cover for the first time in 2004, and then made the cover again in 2006.

Carolyn Murphy made her first cover the year after Veronica Varekova made her first, which was 2005. Then in 2006 she joined Varekova, Elle Macpherson (5), Rebecca Romijn (2), Rachel Hunter (2), Daniela Pestova (3), Elsa Benitez (2), and Yamilla Diaz (2) on the cover of the big All-Star issue. Obviously, if it weren’t for that issue this list would be a lot shorter.

Kate Upton is undoubtedly the biggest model in the world right now. The blonde bombshell from Melbourne, Florida, made her first cover last year, and apparently everybody liked it so much that SI decided to go with her again in 2013.

I don’t know about you, but I think that was a good call. You just can’t go wrong with Kate Upton right now.
