This Day In Sports History (February 21st) — Kristi Yamaguchi
It was on this day in 1980 that the United States Men’s Olympic hockey team shocked the world by beating the heavily favored Soviet team. Mike Eruzione scored the winner with ten minutes to go in the third period for a 4-3 victory.
What most people do not realize is that this game did not win the gold medal for the Americans. The U.S. team, made up of collegiate and amateur players, would actually take home the gold by beating Finland by a score of 4-2. However, the win over the Soviet’s was the talk of the Olympics, as they were considered the best hockey team on the planet at the time.
