UEFA Champions League: Nani’s Red Card the Difference as Real Madrid Beat Manchester United (Video)
Anytime two historic soccer clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid square off against one another, it is bound to attract plenty of attention worldwide. Today’s UEFA Champions League match-up between the two teams at Old Trafford was no different, and now the world is talking about Nani‘s controversial red card that effectively turned the tide and sent Real Madrid into the UCL quarterfinals.
With Man U leading Real by a score of 1-0 (2-1 on aggregate) in the 56th minute, Nani was issued a red card for what Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir deemed to be a dangerous challenge on a 50/50 ball against Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa. It was a call that sent the entire stadium into a frenzy, with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson leading the charge.
Here’s a look at Nani’s challenge and Sir Alex Ferguson’s reaction. Was it worthy of a red card?
If you ask me, I’d say Real Madrid was handed a freebie on that call. And in case you haven’t already guessed, they cashed in on it, as Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo scored goals in the 66th and 69th minutes to put the Spanish club ahead for good. And with the 2-1 win (3-2 on aggregate), Jose Mourinho‘s club advances to the next round.
Do they deserve to be there? Mourinho didn’t seem to think so following the match:
But as we all know, sometimes life’s not fair, and sports is no exception. But that probably won’t stop the millions of Manchester United fans from crying foul…or, in this case, no foul.
Hat Tip to 101 Great Goals for the red card footage.
