The 20 Members of the NBA’s 60 Points Club

by: Esteban On  Friday, March 8, 2013

nba players who have scored 60 points in a game

This season, the highest point total put up in a single game is 54. That feat was achieved just last week by the Warriors’ Stephen Curry, and it was only the second 50-point game of the year—the other coming from the NBA’s leading scorer, Kevin Durant, back in January.

However, while a 50-point game is impressive, the really elite achievement is the 60-point game. There have been 144 50-point games since 1990, but in the entire history of the NBA there have only been 62 60-point games, and they have been produced by just 20 players.

Now that’s an elite group. It’s so elite, in fact, that it doesn’t even include guys like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, or LeBron James.

So who is a member of the 60-point club? Well, you’re about to find out.

20. Bernard King

20 bernard king - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? No

Bernard King was one of the best small forwards of his era (1977-1991) and in 1984, while playing with the Knicks, he dropped 60 points on the Nets. He  isn’t a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame (though he is still eligible, and his 22.5 PPG are the best of all eligible players), but at least he’ll always be a member of this elite group of NBA players.

19. Larry Bird

19 larry bird - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

Though he was a 3x NBA MVP, a 2x NBA Finals MVP, and a 12x All-Star, Larry Bird never once led the NBA in scoring. However, the legend did score 60 points in 1985 against the Hawks.

18. Tom Chambers

18 tom chambers phoenix suns - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? No

Tom Chambers dropped 60 points on the Sonics in 1990 while playing with the Suns. This power forward is still eligible for the Hall of Fame, but it’s doubtful he’ll ever make it. If he doesn’t, and the window of eligibility closes, he may wind up as one of three or four members of the 60-point game club not in the Hall. (There are six guys on the list who aren’t in the Hall of Fame, but three of them definitely will be once they are eligible.)

17. Allen Iverson

17 allen iverson - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? not yet

Allen Iverson is one of the three non-Hall of Famers on this list who definitely will make it once he is eligible. He scored 60 points against the Magic in 2005.

16. Gilbert Arenas

16 gilbert arenas - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? No

Yeah, Gilbert, we can’t believe you’re on this list either. But it’s true—you scored 60 points against the Lakers in 2006.

15. George Mikan

15-george-mikan-nba-60-points-club-players-who-have-scored-60-points-in-a-game

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

The late George Mikan of the Minneapolis Lakers is widely regarded as the NBA’s first superstar. In fact, the 6’10″ center was so dominant in his day that the league made several rules changes to make things more fair for other teams—such as widening the foul lane and introducing the shot clock. (The Pistons tried holding the ball for minutes at a time, taking only 13 shots the whole game, just to keep the ball out of Mikan’s hands.)

Anwyay, Mikan scored 61 points against the Rochester Royals in 1952.

14. Karl Malone

14 karl malone - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

The Mail Man was a 2x NBA MVP and a 14x All-Star, and while he never did get that championship ring, he did score 61 points against the Hawks in 1990.

13. Shaquille O'Neal

13-shaquille-oneal-lakers-nba-60-points-club-players-who-have-scored-60-points-in-a-game

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? not yet

One of the 7 players not in the Hall of Fame (but also one of the three who certainly will be), Shaq is the last “big man” to drop 60 points in a game. The Big Aristotle accomplished the feat against the Lakers’ in-house rivals, the Clippers, back in 2000.

12. Tracy McGrady

12 tracy mcgrady - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? no…but maybe?

T-Mac is one of those players on the cusp of the Hall of Fame. I think he’ll ultimately get elected on the strength of his 7 All-Star selections and 2 NBA Scoring Championships. Plus, you know, there was the 61 points he dropped on the Wizards while still playing for the Magic (and not the Qingdao Eagles) back in 2004.

11. Joe Fulks

11 joe fulks 1948 card - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

Joe Fulks was one of the very first “high scoring forwards” in NBA history. The 63 points he scored while playing for the Warriors in 1949 was an NBA record at the time, and it stood for 10 years.

10. Jerry West

10 jerry west - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

Jerry West did it all. The life-long Laker won an NBA Championship, was named Finals MVP (though not in the year he won the championship), made 14 All-Star Teams, and won an NBA Scoring Championship.

Oh, right, and he scored 63 points against the Knicks in 1962.

9. George Gervin

9 george gervin - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

George Gervin dropped 63 points on the New Orleans Jazz in 1978. Though he started out with the Spurs in the ABA, Gervin would up a 4x NBA Scoring Champ and a 9x NBA All-Star, and is generally regarded as one of the greatest shooting guards of all-time.

8. Rick Barry

8 rick barry - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

Legendary small forward Rick Barry played his ball with the Warriors, with whom he won the 1975 NBA Championship and earned the Finals MVP. Of course, it was the year before that Barry scored 64 points against the Trail Blazers.

7. Pete Maravich

7 pistol pete maravich - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

Pete Maravich might be the best NBA player never to win a championship. In 1976-77 he led the NBA in scoring with 31.1 points per game and dropped 68 points on the Knicks while playing for the New Orleans Jazz—and that was before there was such a thing as a three-pointer.

6. Michael Jordan

6 michael jordan - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 5

Hall of Fame? Obviously

Jordan is one of only 4 players to score 60 points in a game more than once. His first 60-point game? Yeah, that came in the playoffs in 1986, when he dropped 63 on the Celtics. His next one came the following March, when he scored 61 on the Pistons. Then, just a month later, Jordan scored 61 points again against the Hawks. after that, Jordan scored 69 against the Cavaliers in 1990—his career high. And, finally, he scored 64 against the Magic in 1994.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, only one other player ever scored 60 points in the playoffs. I’ll give you a hint: Jordan was the second guy to do it.

5. Elgin Baylor

5 elgin baylor - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 4

Hall of Fame? Yes

The first player to score 60 points in the playoffs was Elgin Baylor. However, that wasn’t his first time scoring 60.

The first came in 1959, when he scored 64 against the Celtics, beating Joe Fulks’s single-game points record. The next time came one year later, in 1960, when Baylor beat his own record by scoring 71 points against the Knicks. Then he did it again in 1961 against the Warriors, scoring 63. And finally, in 1962, Baylor scored 61 points against the Celtics in the playoffs.

4. David Robinson

4 david robinson - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

The Admiral cemented his status as one of the greatest big men in the history of basketball when he scored 71 points against the Clippers in 1994.

Actually, no, that’s not true. He really cemented his status as one of the greatest big men by winning championships in 1999 and 2003. But that 71-point game really helped.

3. David Thompson

3-david-thompson-nba-60-points-club-players-who-have-scored-60-points-in-a-game

Number of 60-Point Games: 1

Hall of Fame? Yes

David Thompson never led the league in scoring, but in 1977-78 he averaged 27.2 points per game and scored a whopping 73 against the Pistons.

2. Kobe Bryant

2 kobe bryant - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 5

Hall of Fame? Inevitable

Kobe is tied for Jordan with the second-most 60-point games, and of course one of those games was the second-highest single game point total of all-time. That game came in 2006, when Kobe scored 81 points against the Raptors.

Kobe’s first 60-point game came in 2005 against the Mavericks. It was later in that season that he would score the 81 against Toronto. Then he recorded two more 60-point games in just 6 days apart in 2007 against the Blazers and Grizzlies. And finally, his last (for now) 60-point game came in 2009 against the Knicks.

The guy is a scoring machine, and yet he’s got just two scoring titles on his resume…along with those 5 rings.

1. Wilt Chamberlain

1 wilt chamberlain 100 - nba 60 points club (players who have scored 60 points in a game)

Number of 60-Point Games: 32

Hall of Fame? Yes

The last one is obvious. Wilt Chamberlain has 6x more 60-point games than either Jordan or Kobe. That is insane. Obviously, I’m not going to list all of them, but the highlight of course is Wilt’s record-setting 100-point game in 1962. But he also scored 70 points 5 times, and 60 points 26 times.

So when it comes to 60-point games, it’s Wilt and then everyone else.
