Without a doubt, the biggest surprise of the abbreviated 2013 NHL season is the Montreal Canadiens. Nobody really knew Chicago would be as good as they are, and the Ducks are somewhat surprising, but with their talent, observers certainly thought they both had a chance to be good.
But the Canadiens? They were supposed to be bad. They weren’t supposed to be fighting the Boston Bruins for first place in the Northeast Division. And nobody feels that more than the Bruins.
The B’s are pretty much the same team that won the Stanley Cup two years ago. They had serious designs on doing it all again this year, and they figured, if nothing else, they’d win their division in a walk and earn at least the #3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. But Montreal just keeps on winning…and winning…and winning. And it’s starting to get to the Bruins.
Don’t believe it? Just look at the reaction of Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask after he gave up the winning goal in a shootout against the Habs last night in Boston. It comes at the 0:52 mark of this clip:
Take a deep breath, Tuukka. It’ll be okay.
Of course, I’d be frustrated too if my team had a 4-2 lead heading into the third period, but gave up a tying goal in the final minute of regulation and then lost in a shootout…to a team that nobody outside Montreal figured would be any good.
