Coyotes’ Antoine Vermette Scores an Own Goal (Video)

One year after making it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, the Phoenix Coyotes find themselves on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture looking in with less than ten games remaining in their regular season.  They currently sit in ninth place, just three points back of the eighth-place Detroit Red Wings.  And if they expect to catch the Wings for that final playoff spot, they’ll have to do a better job of putting the puck in the net than they did last night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Sure, the Coyotes players were able to combine for at least one goal on the night, but that goal just so happened to end up in the wrong net (i.e. their own net).

With just over one minute remaining in the game and the Coyotes trailing 1-0, goaltender Mike Smith made his way to the bench for the extra attacker, but that meant no one was back there to stop Antoine Vermette‘s errant pass to the point, which eventually ended up in the Phoenix goal.

Another own goal in the NHL, but at least this one wasn’t credited to a goalie—Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis was awarded the goal.
