Stat Line of the Night — 4/22/2013 — Jimmy Howard
The Detroit Red Wings have made it to the post-season in each of the past 21 season, which is easily the longest active streak in the NHL today. However, their streak appears to be in jeopardy, as they entered last night’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture, looking in.
The Wings entered the night trailing the eighth-place Columbus Blue Jackets by three points with two games in hand. If they hope to keep their streak going, it would be ideal for them to win those games in hand, and they started off on the right track thanks to a solid performance between the pipes from Jimmy Howard, who stopped all 34 shots he faced during the Wings’ 4-0 victory over the Coyotes.
The shutout was Howard’s fourth of the season, and it moves the Wings to within one point of a playoff position with just three games remaining. More performances like last night’s should be enough to keep the Wings’ post-season streak alive, and it was easily enough to earn Howard “The Stat Line of the Night” for Monday, April 22, 2013.
