‘Madden NFL 25’ Cover: Fans Choose Barry Sanders Over Adrian Peterson (Video)
Legendary NFL running back Barry Sanders may have retired over a decade ago, but next year he will grace the cover of Madden NFL 25.
Of course, the selection of Sanders was only possible because, for the special 25th anniversary edition of the most popular sports video game franchise of all time, the powers that be decided to pit old school versus new school. EA Sports got together with ESPN’s SportsNation to create a pool of 64 candidates for fans to choose from—32 current players, and 32 legends (or 31 legends and Chad Johnson). Then they let the fans vote in a March Madness-style tournament, and eventually it all came down to a one-on-one battle between reigning NFL MVP Adrian Peterson and Barry Sanders. In the end, over 700,000 votes were cast in the final round, and 58% of them went to Sanders.
Peterson, of course, being the MVP of the league last year, had a somewhat easy path to the finals. Sanders, on the other hand, had to run the gauntlet. Just to get to the final round the guy had to beat the newly retired Ray Lewis, plus a couple of Hall of Famers named Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.
So what does Barry Sanders think about all this? The look on his face when they told him the news on ESPN2 last night says it all.
