BILLIE JEAN KING, BOBBY RIGGS

It was on this day in 1973 that former tennis star Bobby Riggs would take on Margaret Court in a Battle of the Sexes tennis match.  The contest took place on Mother’s day in Ramona, California

At the time of the match, Margaret Court was 30-years-old and the #1 ranked female player in the world, while Riggs was 55 years old and had been retired from professional tennis for years.  However, Riggs would go on to win the match in convincing fashion by a score of 6-2, 6-1.

Bobby Riggs had originally challenged Billie Jean King to a match, but she had declined.  After Riggs had beaten Court, King decided to accept the challenge.  In one of the most famous tennis matches of all-time, Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas.

Here is Bobby Riggs on 60 Minutes.
