In less than one year, the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, will take place. During the 22nd edition of the Winter Games, gold, silver and bronze medals will be handed out to competitors in 98 events across 15 different sports. Athletes all over the world have been preparing for this marquee event for some time now in hopes of bringing home one of those medals, and now they know exactly what those medals look like, as they were unveiled to the public during today’s IOC board meeting in St. Petersburg.
Each medal is designed to portray the Sochi landscape, with the sun’s rays shining through the snowy mountain tops. In terms of size, each medal is four inches in diameter and just under a half inch in thickness. And the gold medal is said to weigh one pound, while the silver and bronze medals are slightly heavier.
