2013 french open fashion

The French Open is played in Paris, which just might be the most fashionable city in the world. Thus, you would expect the players to go the extra mile with their on-court attire and try extra hard to look tres chic…and they do. Some players looked awesome, while some looked ridiculous. Either way, most made bold wardrobe choices before stepping onto the clay at Roland Garros. And with the 2013 French Open heading into its final weekend, now is the perfect time to look back at the fashion hits and misses. So let’s get to it, shall we?

30. Gael Monfils

30 gael monfils busy asics outfit - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Asics

The Verdict: miss

The striped shirt wouldn’t have been so bad without the stupid clashing undershirt. Well, okay, it might have.

29. Stephanie Foretz Gacon

29 Stephanie Foretz Gacon wearing helen kellar sunglasses - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: unknown

The Verdict: miss

The dress here is fine. Plain, but fine. But good Lord, those sunglasses are…well, they’re not good. Gacon looks like Anne Bancroft in The Miracle Worker. (Obscure reference, I know. Just Google it.)

28. Tomas Berdych

28 tomas berdych h&m - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: H&M

The Verdict: miss

Tomas Berdych recently became the first tennis player to sign a deal with H&M, which is one of the trendiest clothiers in the world. So you would have thought he’d hit the courts looking pretty sharp…but no. He hit the courts in this boring outfit.

27. Camilla Giorgi

camilla gorgi awful dress - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: a Camilla Giorgi original

The Verdict: miss

She used to be with Lotto, then Nike. Now Camilla Giorgi designs her own outfits—because hey, she’s Italian.

Obviously, she’d be much better off with a sponsor. I think she made that dress from an old set of her mom’s drapes.

26. Roger Federer

26 Roger Federer nike tennis shoes - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: hit

Oh, Roger Federer, you’re lucky I decided to focus on just your shoes (which are excellent) and not the rest of your outfit (which was crazy drab and boring).

25. Benoit Paire

The Brand: Lacoste

The Verdict: hit

“Color blocking”—it’s the new big thing in fashion.

24. David Goffin

24 david goffin lacoste - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Lacoste

The Verdict: hit

I’ll say it again—”color blocking.” It’s where it’s at.

23. Agnieszka Radwanska

23 agnieszka radwanska lotto - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Lotto

The Verdict: hit

Radwanska didn’t break any new fashion ground with Lotto this year, but she looked sharp in a pretty classic tennis dress.

22. Feliciano Lopez

22 Feliciano Lopez wilson - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Wilson

The Verdict: hit

The shirt and shorts are so-so. What really stands out about Lopez are the shoes—love those orange soles.

21. Donna Vekic

21 donna vekic nike - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: miss

Donna Vekic is still pretty hot, but that shirt looked like some early 90s wallpaper or something. Vekic looked a lot better last year.

20. Fernando Verdasco

20 fenando verdasco adidas - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: miss

(A) Shirts with collars look better. (B) This one makes it looks like he plays for UCLA.

19. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

19 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga adidas - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: hit

If you’re going full-on sporty and not country club casual, this is the way to do it.

18. Novak Djokovic

18 novak djokovic uniqlo - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Uniqlo

The Verdict: hit

Novak Djokovic usually looks pretty sharp on the court, and the 2013 French Open has been no exception.

17. Ryan Harrison

17 ryan harrison nike - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: hit

If you pretend like he’s not wearing that stupid black long-sleeved undershirt, Ryan here looks pretty great.

16. Maria Sharapova

16 maria sharapova nike - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: hit

Maria Sharapova: as reliable when it comes to fashion as she is when it comes to tennis.

15. Milos Raonic

15 milos raonic new balance - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: New Balance

The Verdict: hit

Milos used to wear Lacoste. Now he wears New Balance. This particular look is pretty good, too, except for one thing: the headband. It kind of makes him look like one of the bad guys from Karate Kid.

14. Simona Halep

14 Simona Halep lacoste - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Lacoste

The Verdict: hit

When in doubt, just go with a classic Lacoste tennis dress.

13. Olga Puchkova

The Verdict: miss

No, absolutely not. Take that off.

12. Daniela Hantuchova

12 daniela hantuchova adidas - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: hit

Leggings were probably the hottest new look for women at the 2013 French Open. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t pull it off as well as Daniela Hantuchova here—and I’ll prove it…

11. Dandra Zahlavova

11 sandra zahlavova nike - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: miss

Wait, huh?

10. Jelena Jankovic

9 Jelena Jankociv Fila - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Fila

The Verdict: miss

Jelena looked fantastic without the leggings, but ridiculous with them. Lesson learned?

9. Venus Williams

8 Venus Williams leggings - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Eleven by Venus Williams

The Verdict: epic miss

Dear Venus: stop it.

8. Kimiko Date-Drumm

10 kimiko date-drumm adidas - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: hit

Kimiko is one of only two players for whom the leggings-plus-skirt look really worked. Is it a coincidence that both she and Hantuchova wear Adidas? I think not.

7. Svetlana Kuznetsova

7 Svetlana Kuznetsova in Qiaodan starry night outfit - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Qiaodan

The Verdict: miss

What is that? Van Gogh’s Starry Night? A photo taken by the Hubble space telescope?

6. Ana Ivanovich

6 ana ivanovic adidas - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: hit

Ana Ivanovic looks as good as ever in every possible way—fit, gorgeous, and well-dressed. Adidas is on fire this year.

5. Lesia Tsurenko

5 lesia tsurenko - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: unknown

The Verdict: big hit

I have no idea who made the threads Tsurenko sported this year. For all I know that sweater could be from Old Navy.  Wherever they’re from, they look great.

4. Sloane Stephens

4 sloane stephens neon underarmour dress - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Under Armour

The Verdict: hit

Pastel blue and chartreuse turned out to be an excellent combo on Sloane Stephens.

3. Kristina Mladenovic

3 Kristina Mladenovic - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Adidas

The Verdict: hit

Kristina Mladenovic looked excellent wearing Adidas.

2. Serena Williams

2 Serena Williams - 2013 French Open Fasion

The Brand: Nike

The Verdict: hit

Unlike her big sister, Venus, Serena is content to leave the designing to the professionals—though I’m guessing she probably has a lot of input regarding the clothes Nike designs for her. In any case, as always, she’s looking fine at the French Open this year. I mean, check out those Jordan-esque tennis shoes.

1. The Officials

1 French Open referees - 2013 French Open Fashion

The Brand: Lacoste

The Verdict: hit

Whoa, threw you a curveball there, didn’t I? You probalby didn’t expect to see the officials take the top spot as “best dressed” at the 2013 French Open. But how could I not recognize these fantastic outfits from Lacoste? They’re classic. Not even John McEnroe could disagree with them about that.
