The 2013 British Open gets underway at Muirfield Links in Scotland on Thursday, and like many of the sites that host the prestigious tournament, this one boasts some pretty extreme meteorological conditions.
Want to see just how extreme? Take a look at this shot Phil Mickelson took during a practice round on Monday. With his ball lying just off the green on the side of a small embankment, Lefty decided to take advantage of the howling gale and hit a wedge shot away from the pin. The ball then went up in the air, caught the breeze, and sailed backward onto the green.
It was pretty incredible. Take a look:
Yep, that’s some serious wind. No wonder the British courses feature hard fairways that require a good ground game. With wind like that, if you tried to play an American style aerial game, you’d lose an awful lot of Titleists.
