Meet the 9 Cricket Cheerleading Squads of the Indian Premier League

by: Esteban On  Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Indian Premier League cricket cheerleaders

Most of the time we here at Total Pro Sports focus on cheerleaders from the major North American sports like football, basketball, baseball, and hockey, whether it’s at the professional or collegiate level. However, every once in a while we like to dig a little deeper and give our wonderful readers a taste what else is out there in the world of cheerleading. That’s why we’ve previously done lists featuring lacrosse cheerleaders and even CFL cheerleaders.

Today, though, we’re going to get our multiculturalism on, take a trip across the Atlantic to India, and take a look at the cheerleaders of the Indian Premier League.

No, really. Cricket cheerleaders. They have them. Sure, they’re mostly white women, which is kind of strange seeing as how it’s India. But hey, that’s just the way it is.

Ready to have a look? Then let’s get started…

Honorable Mention: Deccan Chargers Cheerleaders

We kick off our list of IPL cheerleaders with a salute to the women who cheered a team that is no more: the Deccan Chargers Cheerleaders.

A founding member of the Indian Premier League back in 2008 and champions of the league in 2009, the Chargers were put up for sale after the 2012 season. However, the owners declined the only bid, and the league then terminated the franchise altogether for breaching their contract.

I’m guessing there are a lot of Indian cricket fans who really missed the Chargers cheer squad during the 2013 campaign.

9. Chennai Super Kings Cheerleaders

Though they’re the lowest team on the totem pole, you still have to give the Super Kings cheerleaders credit for wearing outfits inspired by traditional Indian fashion.

Also, it should be noted that the Super Kings won back-to-back championships in 2010 and 2011, and they followed that up with back-to-back second place finishes in 2012 and 2013. So obviously, these women are experts at cheering.

One thing the Super Kings Cheerleaders are not, though, is Indian. Not ethnically, anyway.

8. King's XI Punjab Cheerleaders

That’s right. The King’s XI Punjab Cheerleaders are pretty white, too. You’ll notice this is a huge trend.

These women are forced to wear some pretty interesting (read: ugly) uniforms.

And did anyone else catch the irony of these white cheerleaders wearing uniforms sponsored by White Mischief, which is a brand of Indian vodka?

By the way, take a good look at these uniforms. (You’ll see why shortly.)

7. Rajasthan Royals Cheerleaders

Meet the Rajasthan Royals Cheerleaders. They sports a decidedly classic North American cheerleader look.

That security guard is not impressed.

Did you notice that there are only four different women in these three photos of Royals Cheerleaders? They are the only ones I could find. As far as I know, there may only be four Royals Cheerleaders.

6. Delhi Daredevils Cheerleaders

The Delhi Daredevils have some flexible cheerleaders.

And yes, they are very white as well.

Oh, and remember how I told you to take a good look at the King’s XI Cheerleaders’ uniforms? That was because, except for the logo on the shorts, they are exactly the same.

Same sponsor. Same stupid shoulder bands. Same booty shorts.

Weird, right?

5. Pune Warriors India Cheerleaders

The only team in the IPL to field a cheerleading squad decked out in traditional Indian garb and made up of actual Indian women? That would be the Pune Warriors…

Unfortunately, the Pune Warriors are also the latest IPL team to cease operations. They withdrew from the league two days after the 2013 season had ended.

I wonder if it was their lack of blonde western-style cheerleaders that did them in?

4. Kolkata Knight Riders Cheerleaders

Yeah, um, the Kolkata Knight Riders have some pretty great-looking women on their cheerleading squad. Some pretty great-looking, non-white women. Crazy!

I mean, Indian women on an Indian cricket team’s cheerleading squad? How imaginative!

4. Kolkata Knight Riders Cheerleaders

Okay, fine, the Knight Riders do have some white ladies, too.

PS, how about those amazing golden nurses’ shoes?

3. Mumbai Indians Cheerleaders

You know the Mumbai Indians cheerleaders are good. Their team won the IPL championship this year.

3. Mumbai Indians Cheerleaders

Just look at their excellent form. They’re total pros.

And I bet when they go out for a night on the town, they rarely get hit on with the old, “so, are you from around here?” line.

2. Sunrisers Hyderabad Cheerleaders

2 sunrisers hyderabad cheerleaders 3

Replacing the defunct Deccan Chargers for the 2013 season were the Hyderabad Sunrisers. And when it comes to cheerleaders, they obviously picked up right where the Chargers left off.

Now, the Sunrisers Cheerleaders don’t seem to feature a lot of local-born women…

But at least they’re not all blonde. That’s something, right?

1. Royal Challengers Bangalore Cheerleaders

The number one cheerleading squad of the Indian Premier League? That would be the lovely ladies of the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

1. Royal Challengers Bangalore Cheerleaders

As you can see, they also have the exact same uniforms as the King’s XI and Daredevil cheerleaders, only with a slightly different color scheme. So there must have been a sale at the cheerleading uniform store or something.

And obviously, the Challengers Cheerleaders are also very white…like all the other squads.

So what do you suppose is the reason for this? Personally, I’m guessing that it’s hard to find Indian women to join the squads because their culture is considerably more modest than ours. So they bring in a bunch of ringers, likely from England. But, like I said, that’s just a guess. If you know the real answer, please fill us in.

Regardless, the IPL has some pretty fine cheerleading squads. Now you know.
