Stat Line of the Night — 8/14/2013 — Alfonso Soriano
Stat Line of the Night — 8/15/2013 — Sonny Gray
When it comes to drafting and developing pitchers, few do it better than the Oakland Athletics. Entering last night they have had three rookie starters pitch eight scoreless innings in a game over the last two season, and on Thursday they witnessed their fourth rookie starter accomplish that feat.
Making just his second career Major League start, Sonny Gray provided us all with what may very well be a sign of things to come. The 23-year-old rookie allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out nine over the course of eight scoreless innings, as the A’s cruised to the 5-0 victory over the Houston Astros.
While the A’s now have four rookies starters who have pitched at least eight scoreless innings in a game over the past two years (Tommy Milone, Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin are the others), no other MLB club has more than two. Gray was the latest to do it for the Athletics, and he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, August 15, 2013.
