Jason Heyward Hit in Face by 90-MPH Fastball (GIF)
Think you had a pretty bad day at the office on Wednesday? Well, I bet you didn’t get hit in the face by a 90-mph fastball. So that’s something.
Atlanta Braves outfielder Jason Heyward wasn’t so lucky. During the 6th inning of the Mets-Braves game at Citi Field in New York yesterday, a fastball from left-hander Jonathon Niese sailed up and in on the left-handed hitting Heyward, hitting him on the side of the face, right up where the jaw meets the ear.
Luckily, Heyward never lost consciousness. However, pretty much everyone in the stadium still felt pretty unsettled after this one—especially Heyward’s grandparents, who happened to be at the game.
Take a look:
Obviously, Heyward left the game and went to the hospital. There, it was determined, not surprisingly, that his jaw was fractured. He traveled back to Atlanta late last night and will have surgery today. The Braves can’t say how long he’ll be out for after the surgery, but you can bet it’s going to be at least 4-6 weeks.
Fortunately, Atlanta enjoys a whopping 15-game lead in the NL East, so this won’t affect their chances of making the playoffs. However, combined with the loss of Tim Hudson last month, it could very well hurt the Braves’ chances of going anywhere in the playoffs. So we’ll be watching this one closely.
