Stat Line of the Night — 9/18/2013 — Hisashi Iwakuma
Not many pitchers have been able to tame the Detroit Tigers’ offense during the 2013 MLB season. Hisashi Iwakuma is one of the few, as he added his name to the short list following his dominating performance at Comerica Park last night.
Iwakuma entered the game with an already impressive 2.87 ERA, and he would drop it even further to 2.76 after pitching eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out six Tigers batters. By the time the 32-year-old righty from Japan exited the game, the Mariners had already built a 7-0 lead, and they would add one more in the ninth to cap off the 8-0 victory.
It has been yet another disappointing season for the Mariners, but with Iwakuma and Felix Hernandez on their roster, the top of their rotation should continue to be regarded as one of the best in baseball. The former earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Wednesday, September 18, 2013.
