Stat Line of the Night — 10/10/2013 — Justin Verlander
On September 18, Justin Verlander was dealt his 12th loss of the 2013 season and his ERA was sitting at a rather unimpressive 3.66. At the time, many were questioning whether Verlander could still be an elite pitcher that is capable of taking his team to another World Series. During Game 5 of the ALDS last night, those who were still questioning the Tigers’ ace received a firm answer as to whether or not Verlander still has what it takes to be one of the best in the game.
With the Tigers’ season on the line, Verlander dominated the Athletics batters once again, allowing just two hits and one walk against while striking out ten over eight shutout innings. He would hand the ball over to Tigers closer Joaquin Benoit for the ninth, and he would go on to record the final three outs and secure Detroit’s 3-0 victory.
With that performance, Verlander extends his post-season scoreless innings streak to an MLB record 30 innings. He has now gone four straight starts without allowing a single run and he earns “The Stat Line of the Night” for Thursday, October 10, 2013.
