Robert Mathis Welcomed Former Teammate Peyton Manning Back to Indy with Open Arms (GIF)
The most highly anticipated NFL game of the weekend was, without a doubt, Sunday night’s matchup between Peyton Manning and the undefeated Broncos, and his former team, the Indianapolis Colts. Not only was it Peyton’s first game against his former team; it was his first game playing in Indianapolis wearing something other than a blue and white Colts jersey—which is to say, it was pretty weird.
Of course, there was absolutely no doubt how Manning would be received by the fans at Lucas Oil Stadium. We knew they would welcome him back with open arms. The bigger question was how his former teammates would welcome him.
Well, as it turns out, they welcomed him back with open arms, too.
Unfortunately for Manning, those open arms belonged to Indy’s five-time Pro Bowl outside linebacker Robert Mathis, as the big bear hug he received came on a 3rd & 7 on the Denver 9-yard line, and resulted in a fumble and a safety.
Take a look:
That pretty much sums up Peyton’s night in Indianapolis. He was welcomed back…kind of…and his former team won 39-33, handing the Broncos their first loss of the season.
