It was on this day in 1975 that the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox played game seven of the World Series.  The Reds defeated the Sox 4-3 to capture the franchise’s third World Series title.

This World Series was ranked by ESPN as the second greatest Series ever played.  One of the most iconic baseball film highlights occurred in the bottom of the 12th inning of Game 6.  With the game tied at six, Carlton Fisk came to bat representing the winning run and promptly hit a high, deep fly ball towards the green monster.  Cameras caught Fisk wildly waving his arms, as if trying to push the ball into fair territory.  The ball would strike the foul pole, giving the Red Sox a 7-6 win and pushing the series to a seventh and deciding game.

Game 7 proved to be another classic, as Boston jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in search of their first World Series title in 57 years.  However, the Reds came back with four runs in the final four innings to win the game and their first of back-to-back World Series titles.

Here is Fisk’s game winning home run in Game 6
