Ian Kinsler and Prince Fielder Made an ESPN Commercial Three Years Ago Foreshadowing Yesterday’s Big Trade (Video)
As you have probably heard by now, last night the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers made the first blockbuster trade of the MLB offseason: Prince Fielder for Ian Kinsler. Detroit fills a need by acquiring a premium second baseman and shedding salary, while Texas gets a big bat to anchor their lineup and it also makes room for their hotshot prospect Jurickson Profar.
On paper, this deal is a win-win—at least for these two teams. Ironically, the team that may lose out here is the St. Louis Cardinals. Word is they’ve been talking to the Rangers about Elvis Andrus, but now that Texas moved Kinsler, they don’t need to move Andrus as well. So for now St. Louis will have to find another shortstop.
In any case, perhaps the most fascinating aspect of this trade is that Kinsler and Fielder actually made an ESPN commercial a few years back in which they were traded together—by each other—for Tim Lincecum.
I know that doesn’t make any sense right now, but it will when you watch the video below:
See? That’s kind of weird, right?
I wonder if any other ESPN commercials have ever foreshadowed the future?
