Here’s Why Andrew Wiggins Is Kind of a Big Deal (GIF)
Last night in college hoops action, the No. 19 Florida Gators handed the No. 13 Kansas Jayhawks their second consecutive loss, and their third in the last four. It probably didn’t sting quite as much as losing to the Colorado Buffalos on a buzzer-beater—which was how they lost on Saturday—but the Jayhawks certainly must be disappointed to be sitting at 6-3 after being 4-0 and ranked No. 2 back on November 25.
There was one silver lining, however, and that was the play of the kid everyone expects to be the first overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft: Andrew Wiggans. Through the first seven games of the season Wiggans had looked a little tentative, never really showing off the explosive, dynamic talent he’s known for. But last night in Gainesville, Wiggans had a breakout performance that lived up to the hype.
The stat line is nice, of course—26 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks in a low-scoring 67-61 game—but in this case you really need to see it to understand it. So, here:
“Oh, what’s that? Three defenders between me and the basket? LOL, guys.”
Stuff like this is why there’s been so much talk about NBA teams “tanking” this year. They all want to pay this kid to do it in their uniform next year.
