This Dirty Hit Broke Bengals Punter Kevin Huber’s Jaw (GIF)
Normally I love seeing a punter or kicker get clobbered on the football field. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching violent cartoons in which characters regularly got shot with cannons and dropped off cliffs, but there’s just something hilarious about seeing a (relatively) skinny little guy get run over by a 300-pound monster.
However, the hit we saw in last night’s Bengals-Steelers game is not one of the fun ones. It was an absolutely vicious blind side hit by the Steelers’ Terence Garvin on Bengals punter Kevin Huber. Garvin crouched down and launched the crown of his helmet right into the punter’s jaw, fracturing it and knocking Huber out of the game.
Take a look:
Now, I know a lot of people out there think people like me whine too much about dirty hits, and that we won’t be happy until we take all the hitting out of football. But that’s not at all the case. I love big hits when they’re done right.
This one just wasn’t done right. Like it or not, punters and kickers are always ruled “defenseless players” under NFL rules, which means you can never let your helmet make contact with them or make other contact with their heads or necks.
However, even if Huber wasn’t officially “defenseless,” that would still be a dirty play. You don’t make helmet to helmet hits—period. Garvin will be fined, and he will deserve it.
