This ESPN Segment Officially Makes ‘Red Lightning’ the Most Famous Ball Boy in Sports History (Video)
What was the biggest storyline of the 2013 college football season? Was it Jadaveon Clowney deciding to sit out South Carolin’as game against Kentucky rather than risk his health and future wealth? Was it the off-field behavior of Johnny Manziel? Was it the Heisman Trophy-winning play—and rape investigation—of Jameis Winston?
Nope, it was none of the above. The biggest story of the 2013 college football season was the breakout performance of Red Lightning, the Florida State ball boy responsible for the Seminoles’ undefeated National Championship season. The stocky dude with the burly red beard is actually named Frankie Grizzle-Malgrat, and in addition to being the team’s unofficial mascot, he was also their official assistant equipment manager.
Is Mr. Lightning the most famous ball boy in sports history? Well, let me answer that question with another question: how many other ball boys have gotten their own segment on ESPN?
That’s right. Red Lightning was recently interviewed by ESPN’s Colin Cowherd, and it turns out that he’s not some huge weirdo. He’s actually pretty funny.
Take a look:
Train hard this summer, Red. The whole world will be watching you next season.
