Drivers Lucky to Be Alive After Horrifying Crash at Rolex 24 in Daytona (Video)
The Rolex 24 isn’t the most famous auto race held at the Daytona International Speedway. In fact, unless you’re a real racing fan, you’ve probably never heard of the 24 hour endurance race.
Now, of course, you have. But unfortunately it took a very horrifying and nearly tragic crash to make that happen.
On Saturday evening, just three hours into the event, Matteo Malucelli of Risi Competizione experienced some mechanical problems that brought his car to a stop on the side of the track. Memo Gidley of Bob Stallings Racing didn’t see the obstruction, and when he tried to swing around a car on the outside, his Corvette plowed right into Malucelli’s Ferrari at full speed.
Take a look:
Both drivers were immediately taken to the hospital. However, miraculously, neither is in critical condition. Malucelli apparently suffered a “severe cerebral concussion” but is expected to be fine. Gidley, meanwhile, suffered some unspecified injuries to his arm and leg and a fracture to his spine that will require surgery.
Obviously, both drivers have long recoveries ahead. But relatively speaking, they are very lucky. They could both easily be dead.
