This Day In Sports History (January 30th) — Super Bowl XXXIV

Super Bowl XXXIV

It was on this day in 2000 that the St. Louis Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV.  It was the franchise’s first, and only, Super Bowl victory.

The 1999 season was quite the roller coaster ride for the St. Louis Rams, as they would lose their starting quarterback, Trent Green, to a season-ending leg injury during the pre-season.  That allowed little-known Kurt Warner to step in, and he did so admirably, leading the Rams’ offense to an incredible 526-point season.  This marked the beginning of what many would refer to as “The Greatest Show on Turf.”

The Rams would finish with a 13-3 record and cruised into the Super Bowl with wins over the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  As for their opponents, the Titans, they would need a Music City Miracle against the Buffalo Bills, along with a few more big plays in order to reach the big game.

This Super Bowl would turn out to be an exciting one, as Rams’ linebacker Mike Jones tackled Titans’ receiver Kevin Dyson on the Rams’ one-yard line on the final play of the game to secure the 23-16 victory.  In addition to winning regular season MVP honors, Kurt Warner would also earn the Super Bowl MVP, recording 414 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Here is a look at the Titans’ final drive of the game.
