Leafs Captain Dion Phaneuf Deliveres Huge Open-Ice Hit…to His Own Teammate (GIF)
Last night, with the Toronto Maple Leafs trailing the San Jose Sharks 4-2 early in the third period, team captain Dion Phaneuf decided to try to get his team going by delivering one of his trademark open-ice hits to Patrick Marleau.
Good idea? Absolutely. Toronto had just narrowed the deficit to two and there was a lot of time left on the clock. They had a slight window of opportunity to get back in the game, and big physical plays often provide a spark and shift momentum.
Unfortunately, though, this particular good idea was not properly executed, and instead of clobbering the Sharks’ star center, Mr. Cuthbert clobbered his own teammate, James Van Riemsdyk.
Fortunately for the Leafs, after performing some baseline tests, it was determined that JVR did not suffer a concussion, which meant he was allowed back on the ice to finish the game.
Unfortunately for the Leafs, a hit that was supposed to boost their momentum ended up sucking the life out of them, as they would go on to lose by a score of 6-2.
