Only One Perfect March Madness Left After Second Round of NCAA Tourney
Following Upset Loss, Coack K Visited the Mercer Locker Room to Congratulate Them (Video)
There’s good sportsmanship, and then there’s great sportsmanship. And Duke’s famous (or some might say infamous) Mike Krzyzewski, a.k.a. Coach K, demonstrated the latter concept after Duke’s upset loss to Mercer yesterday.
The loss represented another piece of what’s shaped up to be the major theme of March Madness this year—upsets.
Mercer was the No. 14 seed and still managed to beat No. 3 Duke. But Coach K spent practically the entire post-game press conference praising Mercer, and he followed up that kind gesture with an even kinder one when he took a trip to the Mercer locker room to personally congratulate the team on their victory. It was a pretty impressive show of goodwill from the coach, especially given that Duke’s loss against Mercer was one of the worst of Krzyzewski’s career.
USA Today‘s Nicole Auerbach tweeted a photo of Mike Krzyzewski’s visit to the Mercer locker room, which you can see up above. She also included the following quotation from Coach K’s speech to the Bears’ players: “If we got beaten, at least we got beaten by a hell of a basketball team.”
You can see a little bit of video from the event, which includes a look at the surprised reactions of the Mercer players, below.
