MMA Fighter Collapses in Corner, Allowed to Continue Fight (Video)

RFA 14 junior maranhao vs. matt manzanaras

On Friday night, the Resurrection Fighting Alliance and the Wyoming State Board of Mixed Martial Arts really looked like a bunch of idiots.

Why? Because they let a fight continue after one of the guys had passed out cold in his corner in between the fourth and fifth rounds.

The event was RFA 14, and the guy who passed out was Junior Maranhao. He was taking on Matt Manzanares in the main event, and the fourth round concluded with Maranhao in a triangle choke for about 40 seconds.

Amazingly, Maranhao survived that and returned to his corner afterward. However, while sitting on his stool, the guy just suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the mat.

Now, even if you don’t think a fight should be ended automatically when one guy passes out cold, you at least have to admit that there should probably be a thorough medical exam before he is allowed to continue. And according to Wyoming MMA, there was.

Here’s their emailed statement to Josh Sanchez at Fansided:

Dear Mr. Sanchez,

Thank you for reaching out to the Board. As to your question regarding Mr. Maranhao, he was thoroughly examined by a licensed physician after he fell off his stool between the 4th and 5th round of the RFA event in Cheyenne on April 11. He was also examined by his corner men and the referee. All parties, including Mr.Maranhao, believed and stated unequivocally that Mr. Maranhao was medically safe to and capable of finishing the fight. In fact, he fought well in the last round and lost in a close split decision. He was examined by a licensed physician after the bout as well and again found to have no neurological or other medical issues of concern.

The Wyoming State Board of Mixed Martial Arts stands by our physicians and officials and has the utmost confidence in their ability to assess the medical status of Wyoming contestants. Safety is the Board’s number one priority and all necessary precautions were taken at the April 11 RFA event to ensure that Mr. Maranhao was safe to continue fighting.

Again, thank you for your interest in Wyoming MMA.

Here’s the thing though. We have video of the incident, and Maranhao was most definitely not “thoroughly examined”by the doctor. The “licensed physician” walked over to Maranhao’s corner, asked a question, and walked away.

Take a look for yourself. Maranhao passes out at the 2:12 mark, and the “examination” takes place at the 2:47 mark.

Nice job, guys.

Remind me never to take part in an MMA fight in Wyoming.
